Steven Spielberg came to San Diego Comic Con (SDCC) 2017 with lofty goals, but he came prepared.
Spielberg has taken on directing the film adaptation of Ernest Cline’s book Ready Player One. The story takes place in a future where Earth is ravaged by overpopulation, economic stagnation, and fossil fuel depletion. To escape the unforgiving future James Halliday creats a virtual reality society called OASIS. When he dies, it is announced that the first person to find an Easter egg in OASIS would inherit his fortune and empire. Ready Player One follows an 80’s obsessed teen named Wade Watts as he tries to find clues that lead to the treasure.
In the trailer for Ready Player One, Spielberg went all out with nerdy, nostalgic pop culture references. In two minutes The Iron Giant, the DeLorean from Back to the Future, Freddie Kruger, and Duke Nukem make an appearance. The cast for Ready Player One includes Tye Sheridan (Cyclops; Ex Men: Apocalypse), T.J. Miller (Weasel; Deadpool), Simon Pegg (Shaun; Shaun of the Dead), and Ben Mendelsohn (Danny Rayburn; Bloodline).
Ernest Cline was able to have a say in the adaptation in his role as co-writer. Steven Spielberg was a big fan of the book going into production:
Spielberg on Ready Player One: "When I read Ernie’s book, it was the most amazing flash-forward and flash-back at the same time."

Overall, Ready Player One promises an authentic adaption that will do the book justice. For the fans of the audio book, Wil Wheaton won’t be in the film, but is supportive of the project. The film hits the silver screen March 2018.
