It’s been a year since Bethesda showed the world what its version of electronic card game would look like. We finally see the card game The Elder Scrolls: Legends (TESL) on android and iOS. In a world of Hearthstone, Gwent, Magic The Gathering: Online, why does it matter that Bethesda wants to enter the fray?
Bethesda is a great rich franchise to draw inspiration from to support a card game.
This game has all the Skyrim references.
If you haven’t been living under a rock for the last ten years you’ve most likely heard about a little game called Skyrim. On top of Skyrim there are plenty of cards referencing The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, a personal favorite. Bethesda also draws content from Morrowind. From these games a beautiful mosaic of orcs, dragons, and everyone’s favorite khajiit J’zargo are at your disposal to create a deck.
Innovative and fresh game design make the overall game play much more enjoyable.
One of the best features of this game is the elements of balance as the match plays out. With most card games directly damaging your opponent as quickly as possible is the best way to win the game. In TESL, you start at 30 health and at every five life loss you will lose a rune and draw a card. Sounds pretty good, but there’s more. Cards drawn this way can be played immediately if they have the keyword prophecy. These mechanics add multiple lines of play and lead to more interesting games than a standard card game.
Prophecy adds another layer in the decision making process.
Going second has also been balanced by allowing that player to add an extra magicka once per turn for three uses. Rather than Hearthstone giving you a one-time boost. Going second, will not, however give you an extra draw step like most card games.
Creature placement is taken to another level. A fundamental principle to this game is the use of the lanes. There are two lanes, the left is the open lane with no effects. The other lane is the cover lane, which provides minions a turn in cover before you can attack. Cover works similar to stealth in Hearthstone, where the minion can’t be targeted by your opponents creatures. Cover doesn’t protect your minions from action spells allowing for counter play.
There is a lowered emphasis on random elements compared to popular mobile games. Hearthstone has defined mobile digital card games. The issue that some players have is the luck factor. In Legends, you wont see many cards that deal a varying amount of damage. In fact, the biggest RNG factor in the game is the prophecy cards that only you can trigger. Overall, this lends itself to very satisfying gameplay decided by skill.
Bethesda is regularly supporting the app.
The app has a monthly update at the very least. We see many phone apps that have their fair share of bugs and glitches. Bethesda wants nothing but the finest to ensure the best game experience for the player base. In the monthly patch a new card will also be added, as well as balance changes to existing cards. Daily quest rewards and solo arena run supply players with a stream of in game currency allowing new players to quickly assemble collections of cards.
You can find The Elder Scrolls: Legends free in the App Store and Google Play.
