In May 2015, Koji Igarashi (also known as IGA) started a Kickstarter campaign for his new game, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night. The campaign was a complete success, funded in only a few hours. The game drew in $5,545,991 worth of pledges from fans, with only a $500,000 goal. The producer’s admirers have been following the production updates, and the most recent was released on October 5th: IGA revealed his publishing partnership with 505 Games.bloostained1

Who is Koji Igarashi?

One of the reasons the game has garnered so much anticipation is thanks to Koji Igarashi. Igarashi is a game designer and producer known for the Castlevania series. His work also includes working as the assistant director of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. In 2014 he left Konami to found his own studio, ArtPlay, but ultimately ended up working for Inti Creates, a company founded by former Capcom employees. Bloostained: Ritual of the Night is his most recent project. ejwnyeeoaiemamc_8acoratubxais8jsquvj-hed43zmew9zmfn1yefc6zj5fyvko7vqg3mbna0unvplkmrk51wnikopekmheppieej8_ot8ietacn4t3mm9bnmrtx3wgnbnzr4_3ock8a

Partnership with 505 Games

In a video and update on their Kickstarter page, IGA announced his partnership with 505 Games. The company has seen the release of many successful titles such as Brothers, Terraria, Payday 2, the Sniper Elite franchise, Rocket League, and many more. IGA explained the partnership would be a way to allow more players to experience the game now that it’s in full production:
Although we have started this project through Kickstarter, we wanted more people to play now that we are in full production. However, we believe this isn’t possible with our power alone.

About Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night

In Bloodstained, players play as Miriam, an orphan scarred by an alchemist curse. This curse slowly crystallizes her skin, and she must fight her way through a demon-filled castle summoned by Gebel, her friend whose body is now made of crystal. The game will be exploration-focused with the mechanics of a side-scrolling platformer. With RPG and crafting elements, Bloodstained will bring back memories for the fans of Castlevania, and is even set in a Gothic universe–Koji Higarashi‘s signature look.

IGA is leading the project with Michiru Yamane as the music composer, who worked on the soundtrack of many Castlevania games and most recently on SkullGirls and Super Smash Bros for Wii U. The game is being developed for Steam (PC/Mac/Linux), Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Wii U, and PS Vita. Stretch goals were also unlocked through Kickstarter, and some of the rewards included:

  • Artbook upgraded to hardcover
  • 2nd and 3rd playable characters, local co-op and asynchronous online multiplayer
  • Nightmare difficulty, Speed Run, and Boss Rush modes, as well as an online challenge mode and Boss Revenge Mode
  • Voice acting by David Hayter
  • Cheat codes
  • Retro level and a classic mode
  • 8-bit versions of six of the songs and orchestrated tracks
  • Prequel mini-game
Originally announced to be released in 2017, the date was pushed back to 2018.
