Blizzard sure knows how to make videos because this is a beautiful video with a gorgeous soundtrack that’s both uplifting while simultaneously pumping my blood ready to play this map till my eyes bleed. Blizzard Entertainment has unveiled a new map for Overwatch and it what looks to be a beautifully, almost fantasy-like German castle called Eichenwalde.
Eichenwalde was announced at Gamescom today, being the first new upcoming map that will be available to the competitive shooter in September! This new map, Eichenwalde will have a unique feel – almost borderline medieval with a hint of fantasy. Attacking players will have to escort a battering ram to infiltrate the castle while opposing team must prevent it reaching its destination making Eichenwalde a hybrid assault and escort map.
“The site of one of the most famous battles during the Omnic Crisis, it was here that the leader of the Crusaders, Balderich von Alder, and a handful of his best soldiers made a last stand against an advancing automaton army. Outnumbered and outgunned, they were ultimately slain during the resulting combat. However, thanks to their valiant efforts, the German military was able to push back the omnic offensive and win the fight.”
– Blizzard Entertainment’s official description of Eichenwalde
Fun fact: apparently Eichenwalde is where Bastion came from.
Most of the Bastion units used by the omnic forces were destroyed at the end of the war. Eichenwalde’s beautiful landscape, almost surreal-final fantasy FFXIV look alike (with the castle and cottages), will be littered with remnants of what looks like an intense battle between human and omnic. Incidentally, Blizzard’s new animated short “The Last Bastion” will be aired on Thursday.
