Hearthstone is a really fun and easy starter game for people who are looking to get into the competitive card playing scene. With its PC release in early 2014 followed quickly by a mobile release, Hearthstone became a huge and instant success with its wide variety of cards and game modes. Boasting a huge following from other Blizzard games, Hearthstone rushed into the hands of many people ranging from hardcore raiders, StarCraft champions, and even parents who were brand new to video gaming.

With its easy game play and highlights of playable cards, many could dive right into the fun or jump into the card grind. Hearthstone has over 700 cards, 3 different types of card packs, and 3 solo adventures – making the possibilities nearly endless! Competitive cut-throat players can join in Hearthstone’s intense eSports scene where prize pools have been upwards of $1 million, bringing fans from all over the world to “sit by the fireside” and play via Battle.net.

Paladin vs Paladin, Rare card: Anyfin Can Happen

Each game is unique due to the large pool of cards available to create decks. Players never know if they are going to be facing a pro with a stacked deck (full of powerful rare cards), a player trying out a new method, or someone who is a good ole fashioned troll just having a blast. With 9 different class decks to choose from, each with their own unique hero power, players can incorporate common cards in with their class cards.

Hearthstone may also appeal to players who just want to collect everything. Each month, Blizzard releases a new card back for those who play in ranked mode. For those who are unfamiliar, card backs allow players to replace the standard design of the back of the card with an alternate one. Playing in ranked mode is the most common (and cheapest) way to unlock card backs but there are also other options available. If players have played other Blizzard Entertainment games, they might also earn rewards and virtual prizes based on their progress or achievements in those games! Some examples of these collectibles are the Hearthstone Card mount for Heroes of the Storm and the Hearthsteed mount for World of Warcraft.

Hearthstone is a free-to-play game but players have the option of purchasing 5-card booster packs for 100 gold (game currency) or use real currency to buy packs in groups of 2, 7, 15, 40, and even 60 ranging from $2.99 to $69.99. The store also sells “Adventures” which are solo “dungeons” that cost a little more than a booster pack. They can be a lot of fun for a player that might not be ready to battle other players since they open up more options to fight class specific bosses. The newest Adventure called League of Explorers offers players a choice of (or all) 45 unique cards for just $19.99. The other two Adventures, Naxxramas and Blackrock Mountain, cost $24.99 but only give about 30 cards each. Though the price point might not seem worthwhile, the game is all about the cards you collect and how well you use them!

Hearthstone has a lot of really great qualities, but Blizzard Entertainment definitely did something that many players were taken aback and confused by. New Hero portraits were added to the shop and although there aren’t many yet, the portraits feel like a useless addition. While it does sound appealing at first, for $9.99 players can purchase a new portrait for either Warrior, Hunter, or Mage and receive their matching card back. The $9.99 does not give players all of the portraits… only one of them. For some collectors or players who may have some extra money to spare, I suppose it is a good idea. Still, most players thought this was just Blizzard trying to see what else they could profit from.

If players are looking for a game within the Blizzard universe that is simple to pick up but difficult to master, Hearthstone is it! What about a mobile game that can be played at work, the bus, school, and even out at a bar? The answer is and will always be… Hearthstone.
