In a recent update from The Sims website, EA and Maxis are now introducing a new feature in Sims 4 that will allow players to immensely diversify what their Sim looks like. With this new update, you can choose your Sim’s:
- Wardrobe options
- Physical body traits
- Pregnancy options
Any customization options they have introduced since Sims 4’s first release will now be available to any Sim regardless of gender. Basically, you now have a whole new world of choices! Over 700 items are now available to your Sim to make them look masculine, feminine, or somewhere in between.
The Sims is made by a diverse team for a diverse audience, and it’s really important to us that players are able to be creative and express themselves through our games. We want to make sure players can create characters they can identify with or relate to through powerful tools that give them influence over a Sims gender, age, ethnicity, body type and more. – Maxis
These are baby steps for more transgender and non-binary inclusion in video games and it’s great to see the gaming industry stepping further into this spectrum. There has been a notable rise of LGBT customization and visibility in video games. If you are interested to see what other games in the past have incorporated transgender characters, check out TransGamerSociologist.
Personally, I am ecstatic about this decision. Being a trans youth myself, it is always encouraging to see some customization like this or some nod to my community. Being represented in any type of media, especially one I particularly enjoy, is uplifting. In the near future, I hope for even more LGBT-inspired decisions and visibility coming from video games in particular.
