The Warlock of Firetop Mountain on Steam is a digital reimagining of the classic adventure gamebook written by Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone. Tin Man Games is bringing it closer toward its tabletop role-playing game roots, complete with a rich interactive 3D map, collectible digital miniatures, an updated combat system and the ability to explore Firetop Mountain with multiple characters.
An excerpt from the storyline, printed on parchment with the player and level in the backgroundAs you adventure into the mountain with a selected hero, you are given options along the way, which will determine the route you take. Without the ability to backtrack, this presents some challenges you never encountered in the previous run. While fighting your way through, you gather a currency used to unlock more characters who all have their own unique plot and reason for their adventure.

A combat scene in the game, where the hero faces off against multiple enemies. The game is filled with a rich story and presents itself in a way that is extremely pleasing to play. This storytelling carries over into the combat system. While staying faithful to the original book’s gameplay mechanic of rolling dice, and applying bonuses to determine damage, Tin Man Games added a little twist.

Every battle takes place on a grid with the player, enemies and environmental obstacles. Both sides choose their actions, which are then both executed at the same time. Unlike traditional RPG titles where you take turns striking back and forth, The Warlock of Firetop Mountain allows you to try and anticipate enemy moves to attack in the location they are moving to while avoiding their offensive moves.

For anyone who is a fan of games like Dungeons & Dragons or PathfinderThe Warlock of Firetop Mountain provides that same dungeon crawling and story-driven type of experience. While playing along, it feels very similar but doesn’t require the time and effort to get a group of people together to make it happen. If you’re looking for that old-school kind of experience, The Warlock of Firetop Mountain is just what you’re looking for to get your RPG fix!
