I consider Yu-Gi-Oh! to be one of my favorite anime series of all time. I played the paper card game back in middle school and high school. Needless to say, I became instantly intrigued by Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Links when Konami began advertising the iOS/Android game awhile back.

After getting around to trying the mobile game myself, what is the verdict from a diehard Yu-Gi-Oh! fan?

In short, it is awesome. Truly, truly impressive.YGO

A Blast from the Past

The modern game of Yu-Gi-Oh! is incredibly complex. As in, the current decks utilize long-winded, five-plus card combos to function. However, thankfully no less, Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Links brings the game back to its roots. The cards and mechanics available in this game are simpler and more straightforward.

The moment I played my first match, it brought back instant memories of nostalgia. These vintage cards and strategies launched the Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise into instant popularity back then. So to see these cards in action again is a real treat as a fan. If Konami wanted to capture nostalgic magic, they succeeded.

Right at Your Fingertips

At first glance, the app sports a polished look on many levels. Everything from the menus and interface just feels intuitive and easy to pick up. Playing your cards feels responsive. In no time, this app has you moving cards around and navigating the in-game phases like a natural. Help screens ensure even amateur players of Yu-Gi-Oh! will get up to speed with the rules.YGO

In addition, I love the little touches Konami included for extra flair. After all, having characters from the original anime voice their lines is pretty darn cool. Heck, seeing classic characters in the game animated for a mobile app is the cherry on top of an already tasty sundae. Needless to say, Konami did not skimp on the production values, and fans will truly appreciate this fact.YGO

Furthermore, many elements of this game are a “miniature” version of Yu-Gi-Oh! in general: the deck size, the hand size, the playing field and even your life total. But this all works in favor of the mobile app concept. Because matches cannot possibly drag with this setup, you can definitely squeeze in more games without worry. You unlock content by playing normally or going to the in-game store and shopping with game currency or real money.

A Winning Combo

So far, it appears Konami has put together something truly special as a mobile app game. Right now, the app has surpassed more than five million downloads and counting worldwide. It looks to add toward that number as the game expands to 150 new regions outside of Japan.

Now, more than ever before, is a good time to get back into the Yu-Gi-Oh! craze.
