Nintendo has gone miniature – releasing their NES again, just a little bit smaller.
What Nintendo is calling their “NES Classic Edition” is a fully-capable NES that looks just like the old one, just a smaller version. This NES comes complete with 30 built-in games that include such classics as Donkey Kong, Dr. Mario, Excitebike, Mario Bros, Metroid and the Super Mario Bros series. A complete list can be found below.
The NES Classic Edition will connect to your TV through an HDMI cable and comes with a controller designed much like the original gamepad. Adding to the potential fun, the controller can connect to the Wii Remote for use with the Virtual Console on the Wii/WiiU, the only real surviving aspect of the current WiiU generation.
Many players have experienced the world of emulators when it comes to the classic games and the mini NES uses that to its advantage with multiple suspend points built in. This avoids password memorization or lack of progression storage with the ease of digital software. Further, no longer will the classic players need to pause games overnight to complete a game (something every old-school player knows).
The NES Classic Edition is scheduled to release November 11 and retailing for $59.99. This system provides a wonderful way to experience many of the older titles once again without the legal complications (and sometimes moral ones) or third-party emulators and illegal ROMS.
